PC maintains downward trend in unit sales but profits rise – FayerWayer

During the last few years we have seen a trend that looks increasingly firm in the PC industry. Where unit sales numbers don’t exactly go up.

But at the same time we see an interesting change in the dynamics of distribution of expenses and profits to keep the business more afloat.

For a few years, particularly with the boom and furor over graphics cards for mining or video game use at the top of their technical capabilities, the balance has changed a bit.

Gone are those days of 2016 where the PC industry seemed in serious trouble. Today the picture finally looks a little clearer.

This is how the business of the PC industry moves now

Global market research firm Canalys has just released figures from its latest research concluding that worldwide PC shipments declined during the first quarter of 2022.

That is a trend consistent with what we have been seeing for the last 6 years. But what’s interesting about this report is the finding that revenue, driven by business desktop sales, actually increased during that period.

Despite posting the first 3% decline in PC shipments since 2020, PC revenue was up 15% during the first quarter of 2022. All thanks to business teams:

We’ve seen a shift in consumer demand since early in the pandemic, when people were buying whatever laptop they could find. We are now seeing increased demand from the business segment, leading to higher priced devices with higher specifications.

Companies are increasingly willing to quickly upgrade devices because they see them as an integral tool for their employees’ daily lives, especially in a hybrid work environment.”

This is what Brian Lynch, an analyst at Canalys and one of the authors behind the publication of the analysis of results in the sector where 80.1 million units would have sold in total, points out.

This facilitated the achievement of revenues of USD $70,000 million, as prices continued to rise in a market where supply seems to be adapting.

Desktop PCs, for example, performed strongly, with shipments rising 13% to 16.8 million units.

In contrast, laptops fell 6% in their shipment figures to stand at 63.2 million units.
